Ask for Help
Let's reframe asking for help as a chance to let someone do a good deed.
“Accepting help is its own kind of strength.” - Kiera Cass
We are sooooo solo in our society. We are taught to be strong and independent and to not rely on others. But throughout history we needed to be communal and to live and work cooperatively in order to survive.
Personally, I find it very difficult to ask for help. I feel like it is a sign of weakness, or nobody has time to help, or that is just an imposition. The reality is that asking for help is a chance to let others do a good deed. Don’t you feel great when you are able to help someone?
Today is your chance to make someone’s day by asking for help! We’ll start small.
Try to think about a time when you were able to help someone. How did it feel? Were you pleased to be able to help or annoyed to be asked?
Is there anything you can use help with right now? Maybe think of something small: help carrying something from the car, help crafting an email, or help choosing an outfit for an upcoming event.
Next make a list of who might enjoy helping you with this. Go through the list in your mind and choose the lucky helper, someone who will likely say yes.
Reach out to ask this person for help. As you do, keep in mind that this is a chance for them to do something nice, which always feels good. You might even say that you are helping them by asking for help. 🙂
Once complete, thank the person profusely for the help, giving your genuine feelings of gratitude and maybe even explaining that it is hard for you to ask for help. Bonus if you query them about how it felt to help you.
How does it feel to ask, and to allow someone to help you? Did it get a little bit easier by practicing?
Be sure to think of this practice next time someone asks you for help as well, and keep practicing asking for help!
Will you share a time that you asked for help and it worked out well in the comments below?
